NWO M-grant for developing a new technology for a digital calorimeter

Recently the NWO Domain Board Science approved nineteen grant applications in the Open Competition Domain Science-M programme. M-grants are intended for innovative, high-quality, fundamental research and/or studies involving matters of scientific urgency.

One of these grants was awarded to Prof. dr. Thomas Peitzmann (Institute for Gravitational and Subatomic Physics) for Enabling Digital Pixel Calorimetry.

Calorimeters are indispensable detectors for particle-physics experiments. Conventional such calorimeters provide good energy resolution, but only very limited position resolution and two-particle separation, which becomes more and more important for collision experiments at higher energy. We are developing a new technology for a digital calorimeter, which maintains the good energy resolution, but is orders of magnitude better in position resolution and two-particle separation. When successful, this new technology can become a superior choice for a standard calorimeter in future experiments.
