Icon Diversity & Inclusion Award

Since 2019, the Diversity & Inclusion Award has been presented annually by the Equality, Diversity & Inclusion programme to initiatives that contribute to a more diverse and inclusive university. The votes have been counted and this year's nominees have been announced!

Nominees

Makeda Ferguson

Makeda Ferguson is recognized for her exceptional contributions to fostering inclusivity at Utrecht University. As the co-founder and chair of the African Caribbean Heritage Network, Makeda played a pivotal role in establishing and nurturing this community into the vibrant hub it is today. Through her dedicated efforts, the network has become a beacon for social and educational activities, engaging a diverse academic audience of students and staff.

Makeda's leadership is particularly commendable in navigating the complex and sensitive terrain of postcolonial heritage. She has successfully created a space for connection, sharing, development, and a sense of safety for African Caribbean students and staff. Additionally, Makeda serves as a crucial link with the UU-wide steering committee on Slavery past and colonialism, ensuring effective representation and collaboration.

The Consent Project

The Consent Project, an initiative initiated by students at PPE College in 2019-2020, is a testament to its enduring impact on raising awareness regarding sexual consent and social safety within the student community at both PPE College and Utrecht University at large. This student-led initiative, now in its fifth year, remains an essential support structure for individuals who have experienced sexual violence.

Represented by dedicated members Rebecca Zagarella and Julia Martinez de Velasco Pimentel, The Consent Project overcame the challenges associated with sustaining student-led initiatives. Its longevity is a testament to its ongoing commitment to fostering a safer and more aware university environment.

 

Yousef Al-Sallal

Yousef Al-Sallal stands out as a pioneering force within the Incluusion Community, where he is a founding member. His significant contributions have markedly enhanced the sense of belonging for students and staff with a refugee background at Utrecht University, positively influencing their agency and amplifying the often-unheard voices of refugees.

Before his instrumental role in setting up the Incluusion Community, Yousef was actively involved in volunteering at UU. His dedication and inspiration from these experiences continue to shape the impactful work he does for the Community. The Incluusion Community, under Yousef's guidance, provides a vital platform for individuals with and without a refugee background to come together, fostering mutual support and collaboration.

About the D&I Award

The annual Diversity & Inclusion Award is presented to a student, an employee or a team that has made outstanding efforts to promote diversity and inclusion at Utrecht University over the past year. In addition to the Diversity & Inclusion Award, the winner receives an amount of €2,500, which can be used for diversity promotion.

During the 2024 ceremony, UMCU's first-ever Best Support Award will also be presented.
