Prof. Joanna Aizenberg

Joanna Aizenberg is the Amy Smith Berylson Professor of Materials Science and Professor of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, Director of the Kavli Institute for Bionano Science and Technology and Platform Leader in the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University.

As part of her tenure at the Debye Institute, Aizenberg gives three lectures and a colloquium.

Bioinspired materials design

Aizenberg is one of the pioneers of the rapidly developing field of bioinspired materials design. Her lab’s research is aimed at understanding some of the basic principles of biomineralization and the economy with which biology solves complex problems in the design of functional inorganic materials.

The goal is to use biological principles as guidance in developing new, bioinspired synthetic routes and nanofabrication strategies that would lead to advanced materials and devices. These new bioinspired materials could have possible future effects in fields ranging from architecture to energy efficiency to medicine.

Debye Visiting Chair

The Debye Visiting Chair is a six-week chair for an eminent scientist in one of the fields of interest of the Debye Institute for Nanomaterials Science.
