Grant for PEACE: Portal of Epigraphy, Archaeology, Conservation and Education on Jewish Funerary Culture

Prof. Leonard Rutgers and Dr Ortal-Paz Saar have been successful in securing a major competitive grant from the Rothschild Foundation Hanadiv Europe to further a project that aims at establishing a digital, open-access platform named PEACE: Portal of Epigraphy, Archaeology, Conservation and Education on Jewish Funerary Culture.

PEACE

PEACE will allow scholars from a variety of disciplines to address research questions related to Jewish Diasporic identity and migration, cultural adaptation and demographic development through the ages. Additionally, the project will assist in training the next generation scholars in the use of digital humanities, by teaching them how to address the historical dimension of questions that currently represent major societal challenges.

The project is a cooperation between the Utrecht University’s Ancient History and Classical Civilization Section of the Department of History and Art History, the Digital Humanities lab of Utrecht University, and international academic partners from Germany (Steinheim Institute for German Jewish History) and the USA (Brown University).
