Geosciences Lecturer Award Winners 2019-2020: Gery Nijenhuis and Lonneke Roelofs

Twelve lecturers were nominated for the Lecturer of the Year award, and another twelve were nominated for Lecturer Talent of the Year. The jury has selected three finalists from the nominees for each category. The finalists for Lecturer of the year were Ellen Moors, Gery Nijenhuis and João Trabucho Alexandre, and Mariska te Beest, Lonneke Roelofs and Stef Dingemans were selected as finalists for the Lecturer Talent of the Year award.
 
The Lecturer Award winners were announced during an online meeting on Wednesday, 1 July. Gery Nijenhuis, Lecturer for Social Geography and Urban Planning, was named the winner of the Lecturer of the Year award. Lonneke Roelofs, Lecturer for Earth Sciences, was presented with the award for Lecturer Talent of the Year. The jury selected these lecturers as the winners due to their involvement with their students and the way they succeed in inspiring them. The winners received a cheque for 1,500 euros to be spent on work-related expenses, such as a study trip or books. Congratulations to Gery and Lonneke!

Winner of Lecturer of the Year award: Gery Nijenhuis

Jury member and student Marte Vroom gave the laudation address: "Gery, you’re renowned for your expansive knowledge and the wonderful way you transfer that knowledge to your students. You encourage students to discuss among themselves, and you are completely open to new ideas. Reflection is an important aspect of your teaching style. Lecturer Talent of the Year winner: Lonneke Roelofs

Jury member and student Carolina Halevy gave the laudatio address: "Lonneke, in a very short time, you’ve made a name for yourself as a highly driven young lecturer. You’ve displayed a strong urge to transfer your knowledge and passion for Earth Science subjects to your students. But you also have a strong passion for education - the joy of learning.
