CCSS Visiting Professorship Call 2019-2020

Centre for Complex Systems Studies

The Centre for Complex Systems Studies (CCSS) is established within the Utrecht University focus area Foundations of Complex Systems, which started  in 2014 and will be continued up to  2022. The centre aims at scientific breakthroughs as well as novel solutions for societially relevant issues  by approaching scientific challenges  from the perspective of complex systems science. The CCSS stimulates and facilitates the collaboration on complexity science over the boundaries of disciplines.

Aim of the 2019-2020 call

  • To bring together Utrecht University researchers with researchers of renowned foreign universities or institutes in order to strengthen the complexity research field and community at Utrecht University.
  • To stimulate and strengthen international cooperation.
  • To increase the international visibility of the CCSS.

Conditions

  • All the members of the CCSS (Associate Members, Junior Members, and External Members) can submit a proposal.
  • The visit should focus on complex systems research from an interdisciplinary perspective.
  • The academic activities of the visiting professor should mainly take place at the CCSS, and the CCSS will provide office facilities and meeting place.
  • The visiting professor is willing to give at least one colloquium on a complex systems topic at the CCSS.
  • Other hosting agreements (e.g., travel and housing) for the visiting professor should be arranged by the applicants.
  • For the current call, visits will preferably take place in 2019-2020.
  • The proposal gives a brief impression of the visiting professor, the research area, the scientific contribution to complex systems research, scientific aim of the visit, the added value to the CCSS, opportunities for new international collaboration, the length of the stay, and the requested budget.
  • Each applicant can submit only one proposal.
  • The proposal must be submitted in the enclosed format.

Assessment criteria

  • Track record of the proposed visiting professor.
  • Added value to the CCSS and community at Utrecht University.
  • Opportunities for new international collaboration.

Procedure and timeline

  • Submit by email to the CCSS coordinator dr. ir. Qingyi Feng (q.feng@uu.nl).
  • Deadline is April 25th 2019, 24:00 hrs.
  • The jury will discuss all eligible applications on April 26th 2019. Members of the jury will not contribute to the decision process on applications of their own group.
  • All applicants will be notified at the latest by the end of April 2019.

Other obligation

  • The applicant will organize at least one colloquium during the visit of the visiting professor at the CCSS with the help of Qingyi Feng.
  • The applicant or visiting professor might be asked to write a short article about his/her experiences afterwards, for example, for the website or newsletter of the CCSS.
