AI Act as the bottom, ethics as the ceiling

Report meetup AI Act

On April 2, the Data and Society Knowledge Network, in collaboration with the Municipality of Utrecht and Utrecht University, organized the Meetup 'AI act: maximum or minimum?
During the meeting José van Dijck, Professor of Media and Digital Society at Utrecht University, stressed that in order to use AI smartly, municipalities require human awareness. Institutional judgement is needed: how does AI affect citizens? In addition to technological understanding and knowledge, social responsibility is needed, an awareness of public values.

Mirko Tobias Schäfer, Associate Professor of Data, AI & Society, Utrecht University and Sciences Lead of the Data School, closed the Meetup. "Today was a prelude to having a more broad and extensive conversation. AI is a political issue, just like the environment and housing. As a municipality, you need to take a stand on that. There already are practical tools available to help us develop new competencies for citizens, council, and civil servants, so that we eventually deal with AI in a mature way.”
