Revisiting Security in Open Societies: (In)Security and Synergies at UU
Security in Open Societies & Contesting Governance Platform
We are thrilled to invite you to the upcoming event, "Revisiting Security in Open Societies: (In)Security and Synergies at UU," hosted by the Institutions for Open Societies platforms Security in Open Societies and Contesting Governance. This event will take place on the 14th of March at the Academiegebouw from 9:30 to 13:30.
This event aims to provide a platform for researchers in security studies from various disciplines to continue the discussion initiated during last year's edition of 'Contesting Security in Open Societies.' We will delve into identifying disciplinary differences and exploring potential opportunities for interdisciplinary exchange within Utrecht University.
During the event, participants will engage in discussions on common themes, reflect on their own disciplines, and explore the possible added value of an interdisciplinary approach. We will address questions such as:
- What are the common methods and approaches your discipline applies to studies on security, and what can they contribute to other disciplines?
- In analyzing security issues, what are your discipline's blind spots, and which discipline do you think could fill in that gap?
- What new questions can we ask, and how can we achieve collaborative efforts within UU's existing structures?
We are excited to announce that Ozavci, H.O. (Ozan) will be delivering the keynote speech titled "The World of Security" at our event. Ozan's speech will be a highlight of our networking conference, providing participants with insights into the interdisciplinary nature of security research and the challenges researchers face when moving beyond their own disciplinary boundaries. Ozan will reflect on his new ERC project and current NWO project, highlighting the core aspects of his research on security related issues. He will discuss how he organizes a good interdisciplinary research environment for himself and the added value of this approach. Ozan will also explore the difficulties and rewards of interdisciplinary collaboration.
After the keynote speech we encourage participants to reflect on these questions in subgroups and to share their own experiences during the discussion groups. We will use the COLLAB game as a template to identify disciplinary differences and stimulate interdisciplinary thinking.
We close our event with an informal networking lunch.
We look forward to Ozan's keynote speech and to the engaging discussions that will follow.
