Speaker and topic: Dr Amir Raoof: 'Upscaling reactive and adsorptive transport in porous media - from geosciences to the use of geo-drive knowledge in cross-disciplinary research'.

Hydrogeology and subsurface utilizations for energy and storage very often involve flow of chemically active solutions which may carry particles and fines within rocks and soils . In this talk I will highlight work in the development of Multiscale Porous Media Lab where we integrate microscopic experimental observations together with numerical methods to explore these processes. We begin from the space within individual rock pores up to larger samples of meter size.

I will go further on showing the application of geo-driven knowledge in a highly cross-disciplinary manner to other disciplines. The generated fundamental knowledge on flow and transport in porous materials are applied to solve challenging problems in other research fields related to biological tissues and membranes such as bone and cartilage, as well as industrial materials such as filters, fuel cells, printing papers and catalyst particles.

With the Friday Earth Sciences Talks (FEST) we intend to bring the departments of Earth Sciences and Physical Geography together. The aim is to present (mostly) Utrecht-based Earth Sciences in an accessible way in order i) to stay familiar with each other’s work across disciplines and ii) to help (in particular MSc.) students in their orientation on possible graduation specialisations and future careers. Alumni are also invited.
