How can technologies enable rather than undermine an autonomous life and a flourishing society?
The proliferation of technologies poses fundamental challenges to human self-understanding and the organization of society. What does it mean, for instance, to attribute responsibility to forms of artificial intelligence like automated vehicles? Researchers working within this theme examine the ethical implications of technological disruptions, focusing on how such disruptions can simultaneously widen and close gaps in autonomous agency.

Work with external organisations within this theme
We regularly work with external organisations, for whom we develop training sessions, ethical advisory reports and the like. We have a current project on the digital transformation of work in cooperation with the Federation of Dutch Trade Unions (FNV).
Societal engagement within this theme
We regularly organise and take part in activities aimed at a broader audience, such as talks and book launches. We host a regular Philosophy Café (usually in Dutch). Each year, together with Studium Generale, we organise the Utrecht Day of Philosophy.
