Much of my research focuses on the ethical implications of ageing and life extension. In this area of research, I edited The Cambridge Handbook of the Ethics of Ageing. In addition, I work on emerging biotechnologies and my published work often examines these through the lens of African ethical systems. I have served on several ethics committees, including FEtC-H (UU) and HREC (Wits), and have contributed in an advisory capacity for groups such as KWF (Dutch Cancer Society) and the Nuffield Council on Bioethics. I hold an Honorary Associate Professorship at the Steve Biko Centre for Bioethics at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa.
