I studied philosophy at Utrecht University and the Goethe-Universität Frankfurt. I received my PhD from the University of Essex for a thesis on "Personal autonomy & its aesthetic preconditions: essays on aesthetic understanding & freedom". My research interests are many and varied, but mostly concerned with the interconnections and schisms between practical self-understanding, aesthetic contemplation, and art.

Currently, I am a lecturer in practical philosophy. I also coordinate the humanities minor 'Philosophy, politics, and economics', and I am an editor for Aesthetic Investigations.
