Profile

I am a postdoc researcher at the department of Dutch linguistics. I am part of an NWO-funded research project that studies the syntax of idioms in a range of Dutch and Belgian dialects. Furthermore, I teach the courses Taal: Feit en Fictie (Language: Fact and Fiction) and Taal in Interactie (Language in Interaction).

During my Linguistics studies at the University of Amsterdam, I specialized in the subfield of typology (comparative linguistics). My PhD project studied that degree of transparency of typologically diverse languages, that is, the degree to which a unit of meaning is expressed by means of exactly one unit of linguistic form. In fact, no known language fully commits to this principle, even though non-transparent structures are often hard to learn. In my dissertation, I rank 22 language on their degree of transparency, and show that some types of non-transparency are much more frequent than others. I also show how learnability can account for at least part of the findings.

My research interests are typology, theoretical linguistics (especially functionalist theory), the influence of sociohistoric factors on languages and their grammars, and language complexity. As I find it extremely important that (linguistic) research reaches the non-academic community as well as the academic, I co-author a Dutch language blog. For the same reason, I write popular-scientific articles and books.
