Jeffrey Waal is as a PhD. Candidate connected to the Utrecht Centre for Accountability and Liability (Ucall) and the Willem Pompe Institute for Criminal Law and Criminology. At Utrecht University he obtained a Master’s degree in Criminal Law in 2015 and in 2016 in Criminology (cum laude).

In his PhD research he conducts research on the ways in which different conceptualizations of human subjectivity and personal identity affect the interpretation of and doctrinal seperation between the exculpating conditions of legal insanity, duress and self-defense in excess, from both a (cultural-)philosophical and legal-doctrinal perspective.
