How to apply

The following tests may be used to prove your English language proficiency:

• IELTS, Academic Module
  Minimum score: 6.0 overall band, with at least a 5.5 for writing.
  IELTS is the test preferred by Utrecht University.
  IELTS One Skill Retake scores are not accepted.
• TOEFL, Internet based.
  Minimum score: 83.
  Institutional scores are not accepted.
  The TOEFL institution code for Utrecht University is 9062.
• Cambridge Certificates:
  • Cambridge English C1 Advanced (CAE)
    Minimum score: 169 total, 162 writing.
  • Cambridge English C2 Proficiency (CPE)
    Minimum score: 180 total, 162 writing.
• If you are an Erasmus+ student, your home university is allowed to confirm your English language proficiency by:
  • Signing the UU Language Proficiency Form (provided along with application instructions),
  • Providing a letter of recommendation stating your English language proficiency (expressed using the CEFR system). 

Please note the following:

• Students that have obtained a secondary school diploma and/or a BA degree in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Singapore, UK, USA, or South Africa are exempt from the requirements above.
• Citizens of Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Singapore, UK, USA, or South Africa are exempt from the requirements above.
• Students who have obtained an IB or EB diploma (English-taught programmes) are also exempt.
• Chinese students are required to take either the IELTS or TOEFL test.

  For Law: minimum 93 overall band, with at least 21 for writing.
  Institutional scores are not accepted.
  Please tell ETS to send your original results report to Utrecht University (The TOEFL institution code for Utrecht University is 9062).
• Cambridge Certificates:
  • Cambridge English C1 Advanced (CAE)
    Minimum score: 176 total, 169 writing.
  • Cambridge English C2 Proficiency (CPE)
    Minimum score: 180 total, 169 writing.
• If you are an Erasmus+ student, your home university is allowed to confirm your English language proficiency by:
