Utrecht University publications in book: Global Challenges and the Law of the Sea

Pijlstaartroggen en andere vissen, gezien van onder water in de zee

Catherine Blanchard, Wen Duan and Erik J. Molenaar, all from Utrecht University, have recently seen their work published in the book Global Challenges and the Law of the Sea (Springer, 2020. Marta Chantal Ribeiro, Fernando Loureiro Bastos & Tore Henriksen (eds.))

Catherine Blanchard and Wen Duan co-authored a chapter (together with Otto Spijkers) entitled "Three Structural Pillars of the Future Internationally Legally Binding Instrument for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biodiversity in Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction", which discusses the relationship between the upcoming Agreement on marine biodiversity and existing instruments.

Erik Molenaar authored a chapter entitled "Regional Fisheries Management Organizations", which addresses the role of such organizations in the implementation and development of the law of the sea.

More generally, the book analyses a selection of challenges in the implementation and application of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), including questions related to the role of international organizations in ocean governance, the role of dispute settlement mechanisms for understanding the law of the sea, and the current discussions on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction.
