Utrecht University is Key Partner in the Knowledge Equity Network (KEN)

Utrecht University (UU) tackles global challenges and does so in collaboration with many international partners. Open sharing, transparency and engagement are key in our strategy. Therefore, the UU is now a key partner in the Knowledge Equity Network (KEN), working on the topics of openness and equity.

About the network

KEN was prompted by the observation that limited access to knowledge is a barrier to finding and implementing solutions to the major global challenges facing the planet. KEN believes that global challenges require a collective response. Breaking down the barriers that prevent equitable access to knowledge across institutions and geopolitical boundaries, we can focus on open and collaborative practices of knowledge creation and dissemination. The network's ambition is to connect a large number of international knowledge institutions that share the same vision, emphasizing in this the equality of education and research.

As a Key Partner, the UU is committed to the goals of KEN. By jointly organizing events, collaborating in special interest groups and sharing best practices, we aim to strengthen our knowledge and give substance to the objectives of KEN. By joining and signing the Declaration on Knowledge Equity, the UU demonstrates its international orientation and strengthens its ties with like-minded organizations around the world. The network works with a wide variety of global partners which is pivotal to tackle global challenges as an international institution of education and science

Ambitions for a more equal world

As stated in the declaration, KEN is focused on open and collaborative practices of knowledge creation and dissemination, as they are critical to making knowledge accessible to all. The mission of KEN is to find solutions through the power of knowledge. Key focus areas in KEN include equal access to data/knowledge, equal access to education, valuing multiple knowledge systems (including those of indigenous peoples), diversity and inclusion in education, a transition from competition to collaboration, and recognizing and valuing activities in line with these open practices.

Utrecht University has defined three focused areas within KEN. The UU will focus on the following topics, in collaboration with the Utrecht University Library and the Global Engagement committee

  1. Open Access
  2. Open educational resources
  3. Equitable Partnerships
