Science & Fiction film series: Europe challenged

The European elections in June 2024 are the ultimate opportunity for the Science & Fiction film series to put the spotlight on Europe. Europe is facing major geopolitical challenges. In the areas of migration, security, climate, finance, freedom of the press, etc. On four evenings in May and June 2024, Louis Hartlooper Complex and USG will therefore screen four special films that will make you reflect, with an introduction by scientists: Europa uitgedaagd (Europe challenged). We will start on Tuesday 14 May 2024 with Drawing Lots (2023) and an introduction by Professor Femke van Esch. This will be followed by three evenings of stimulating science and meaningful movies.

Programme

  • Tuesday 14 May 2024: Drawing Lots (2023), with introduction by Femke van Esch

  • Tuesday 28 May 2024: De acht bergen (2022), with introduction by Sebastiaan Princen

Science & Fiction: Europe challenged

Europe is facing major geopolitical challenges. In the areas of migration, security, climate, finance, freedom of the press, etc. How strong is the European unity? Will the EU expand even further or are there any threats of 'exits'? And what about the trend towards more authoritarian regimes and the undermining of press freedom and the rule of law as we observe in some Eastern European countries? Will Europe form a joint army, as a result of the war in Ukraine? And what role can Europe play in developments in the field of healthcare, work and artificial intelligence? While 'Europe' is still an abstraction for many people, decisions in the EU have a direct effect on our daily lives. Decisions which, after all, are the result of the government policies of the Member States. Because Europe; that's us.

We want to reflect on this more extensively with a few impressive films and the insights of our researchers. Come out and see, listen and join us in conversation on one (or all) of these four evenings.

Science & Fiction: Thought-provoking science and films of significance

Science & Fiction brings together thought-provoking science and films of significance. The series is an initiative of Louis Hartlooper Complex and the Utrecht University School of Governance (USG). In the spirit of film interpreter Louis Hartlooper, scientific researchers from Utrecht University will give a short introduction to each film. Afterwards, visitors can talk to them.
