Research grant for responsible use of artificial intelligence

Mehdi Dastani

The project ‘Causality in multi-agent systems: learning and verification’ will receive a grant for two PhD positions. NWO awarded the grant to Mehdi Dastani (PI), Professor of Intelligent Systems, together with co-applicants Natasha Alechina, Thijs van Ommen and Brian Logan. In this project, the researchers will develop techniques to learn, analyse, verify, and predict the causal consequences of decisions made by multiple (artificial) agents.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems are ubiquitous and are increasingly making decisions on behalf of human users. The complex causal inter-relationships between these decisions can have dramatic consequences that are difficult to predict. In this project, the researchers will collaborate with ProRail to study the consequences of decisions made by multiple actors, including human and artificial intelligent agents.

In addition to this project, five other projects have also been awarded grants in the NWO programme Artificial Intelligence Responsible Use.
