Linda Senden's contribution of advice to de Tweede Kamer on the future of Schengen

At the request of the House of Representatives the Advisory Council on International Affairs (AIV) issued an advice on ‘The future of Schengen’. In the advisory letter of 7 March 2016 (in Dutch) the AIV argues that the functioning of the Schengen system is impaired by the lack of control of certain external borders. The internal differences in the processing of asylum applications and in the reception are too big.

According to their advice, closer cooperation is needed of as many member States of the European Union who want to pursue an effective common asylum and immigration policy.

Prof. mr. Linda Senden, Professor of European Law at Utrecht University, was a member of ‘committee Schengen' that prepared the advisory letter. The committee was chaired by prof. Ernst Hirsch Ballin and also comprised mr.  Koos Richelle and prof. Fred van Staden.

Hirsch Ballin elaborated on the advice on the TV programme Nieuwsuur (in Dutch).
