Large funding for Leonard Rutgers’ research on transformation of Jewish diaspora in late Antiquity

Prof. dr. Leonard Rutgers

Prof. Leonard V. Rutgers has received a € 750,000 grant of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) for an international research project entitled Reconfiguring Diaspora: The Transformation of the Jewish Diaspora in Late Antiquity. Rutgers will be conducting a comparative study on the Jewish communities in Italy, Egypt, Israel/Palestine and Iraq. He hopes to provide a better understanding of the factors that have led to the radical marginalisation of the Jewish community in the transition period from the Classical Antiquity to the Middle Ages (200-700 A.D.).
