ERC Starting Grant for Ewout Frankema and Rick Nouwen

Linguist Dr Rick Nouwen and historian Prof. Ewout Frankema have been granted a prestigious ERC Starting Grant by the European Research Council of about 1.5 million euros each. The grant enables them to establish a research line in the upcoming five years. Frankema’s project focuses on a long term approach of welfare in Africa, while Nouwen aims to prove that there is a universal language mechanism for the use and interpretation of so-called scalar expressions.

With the ERC Starting Grant the European Union helps young, talented researchers to establish their own research line. Both Nouwen and Frankema use the grant to continue research projects for which they already received NWO Vidi grants.
