Dr Emanuel Overbeeke of the Musicology research group is nominated for the third Boekman Dissertation Prize, for the best dissertation on arts and cultural policies from the period of 2012 to 2014.

Symphonic orchestras as centre of Dutch music scene

Overbeeke defended his thesis Nederlandse muziek bij Nederlandse symfonieorkesten 1945-2000 in 2012. He conducted his research under the supervision of Prof. Emile Wennekes.

In his dissertation, Overbeekes outlines how symphonic orchestras play a crucial role in the music life of the Netherlands. They do not only offer composers the opportunity to present new pieces to audiences, they also play a big role in the programming and distribution of music pieces to different venues. Overbeekes describes how about 20 Dutch professional symphonic orchestras dealt with musical national heritage in the period between 1945 to 2000.
