David de Wied building 'Very good' according to BREEAM In-Use

The David de Wied building.

Utrecht University has tested the David de Wied building according to the BREEAM In-Use Assessment for education buildings. The building is now - as the second education building in the Netherlands - certified on the components Asset (the building itself) and Management.

Guideline provides insight into sustainability level

The sustainability label BREEAM In-Use is intended as a monitoring tool for existing buildings. The guideline provides insight into the current level of sustainability (of the building itself, the management and use of the building) and the opportunities that exist to reach a higher level. Previously this guideline was only suitable for office, retail and museum buildings, but with a few additions it is now also used for education buildings and labs.

Rated 'Very Good'

Sustainability Consultant Femke Kamp: "The David de Wied building received a score Very good (3 stars) at the sustainability level of the building itself. Here the categories: transportation, processing waste and reducing harmful emissions were evaluated well. The management of the building received a rating Pass (one star), notably due to the fact that many documents just were not complete or not specific enough. This will considerably improve in the coming years."

Utrecht University aims for Excellent

Utrecht University has the ambition to bring the level of sustainability of existing education buildings to BREEAM Excellent level if possible. This is equal to the ambition for new buildings. Sustainability Consultant Femke Kamp: "With the rating of the current situation, we see where the opportunities lie to reach a higher level. Then we can then take action. Some sustainable action is now included in the intensification project David de Wied building. In addition, the installation of solar panels on the roof of the David de Wied building has a positive contribution on the score. Excellent therefor must be achievable in the future."
