Choosing technology is dealing with a man's world

How organisational culture contributes to the loss of female technical talent

In the Netherlands, women are under-represented in the technical sector. In fact: almost nowhere in Europe are there so few women working in the engineering sector as in the Netherlands: only 13%. This is all the more remarkable because more and more girls in secondary schools are choosing technology profiles and more and more women are following technical studies. Social & organisational psychologist Ruth van Veelen of Utrecht University: "If women with a technical degree in their pocket do choose a job in technology, they are more likely to experience gender identity threats: the uncomfortable feeling of being judged on womanhood instead of individual professional qualities."
