Frequently Asked Questions
Below you'll find the Frequently Asked Questions of the Master's Applied Data Science. For international students: you can also check the FAQ on Admission and Application by International Student Admissions.
Application
There is no numerus fixus for the Applied Data Science programme. However, the selection procedure is quite rigorous.
Yes, you can, as long as you will obtain your Bachelor’s diploma before the start of the Master’s programme.
It is not necessary to have passed the English test at the time of your application. The results can be submitted later, but have to be in before the start of your programme.
Applicants from China must apply for a Nuffic Certificate. The Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) will not process Chinese visa applications without this document. Apply for the Nuffic Certificate at the same time you apply for admission at Utrecht University, otherwise your application cannot be processed. You can find more information and apply for a Nuffic Certificate at Nuffic's website.
After you submit your application, the Admissions Office will check your qualifications, whether you paid your application fee and whether your application is indeed complete. If so, you will receive notification that your file will be evaluated by the ADS Admissions Committee. You can generally expect a decision within twenty working days after you receive this notification. However, because this program receives a lot of applications, it can sometimes take longer for your application to be processed.
Yes, you are eligible from all programmes and backgrounds if you fulfill the requirements in programming and statistics. You can find more about our entry requirements on the admission and application page.
The Admissions Committee first looks at credited courses (i.e. those obtained at a university). These provide proof that you have acquired knowledge at an academic level combined with a certain theoretical basis. Practical experience can be of additional value. We do not accept online courses as a substitute for university-credited courses, as online courses do not give a clear indication of the skill level of the candidate.
You need to have knowledge of both of them.
See the University of Applied Sciences section on the Admission and Application page. Additionally, you will need to fulfill the requirements for both programming in R and Python as well as statistics. If you meet these requirements, you can be accepted into the programme.
Applied Data Science does not offer a Pre-Master’s programme. Dutch bachelor students and international students who are currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s programme in the Netherlands can follow the minor in Applied Data Science that is offered by Utrecht University. The minor is 30 EC and spread over an academic year. Please note that Utrecht University students have priority. If you have followed this minor, you do not need any more courses to start the master’s programme. For additional information, please consult the minor programme page and their frequently asked questions.
We do not recommend following two degree-programmes simultaneously. The Applied Data Science programme is a fulltime one-year programme, and leaves no room to fit in other courses.
No, this is not possible. The programme at Utrecht University is a full-time one-year programme and to complete the programme, all courses should be taken from the curriculum.
In principle, you follow the programme full-time. A personalised part-time schedule could be possible, but you have to bear in mind that the course in the first block is 14 EC and therefore almost full-time, as well as the thesis project. Furthermore, the electives are only offered in block 2 and 3, and you will need to complete 3 electives before you can start the thesis project.
Both R and Python are used in the course Data Wrangling and Data Analysis, and in the electives, it depends on the subject, the data, and the teachers’ preferences.
No, this is not possible. However, during the thesis project, you might work with datasets from a company.
The Applied Data Science master’s programme offers 8 different electives that are not covered in the Applied Data Science track.
Applied Data Science is more geared toward using Data Science tools to solve data set problems in society. Data Science also dives into Machine Learning and more fundamental Data problems.
