Writing for Academic Publication (Online, afternoon sessions, Sep 14 - Nov 16) - FULLY BOOKED

Course description

During this ten-session course, you will write an article based on your research for submission to a peer-reviewed journal. All participants must begin with their own current writing project. Evidence of this will be needed on day one – the course is only suitable for people who already have at least some of the results they wish to include in a real article. The aim is to finish your paper and publish it in a refereed journal (nearly every paper finished with the help of this course is published).

Learning objectives

This is a course on research writing for academic publication, not on English and it is as relevant for native English speakers as for those with English as a second language. You will gain skills and insights that will make you a clearer and more productive writer. During this course you will learn to improve your research-related writing by structuring a research article (or proposal or review or conference paper), by drafting and planning more efficiently.

Aim of the course is:

  • Planning and drafting your research article or conference paper;
  • Writing and editing more purposefully, applying practical insights from genre research, psychology, reading (and writing) research, academic publishing and other areas;
  • Finishing the paper, and submitting it to a conference or a peer-reviewed journal or (for proposals) a funding agency;
  • Publishing (or receiving funding).

Instructional method

Through email, follow-up support extends beyond these 10 weeks and includes a copy-edit of the final paper. Individual support continues through revisions to the paper’s acceptance. The level of lecturer engagement offered in this course is therefore unique. At least 95% of non-class time is spent directly on writing, revising and finishing a real article for submission to an appropriate peer-reviewed journal.

Each week builds on the previous week. All participants must begin with their own current, writing project. Evidence of this will be needed on day one – at least a rough draft of an abstract together with a quarter page or so exploring (not necessarily in ‘academic’ language) how the research might fit into the ongoing conversation in its subject.

Our no-show policy

We are happy to offer courses and workshops for free to all GSLS PhDs. However: free of charge does not mean free of responsibility. Our activities tend to be fully booked well in advance. For every late cancellation or no-show we have had to disappoint others who would have liked to attend.

This is how we work:

  • Once you have signed up for a course, we expect you to attend;
  • If you need to cancel your registration, do so at the earliest possible moment, at least four weeks before the start of the course;
  • If you really have to, you are allowed to miss up to one session of this course in total. You always have to attend the first course session;
  • Not meeting the attendance requirements or cancelling within four weeks before the course starts means you will be charged no-show fee (€535 for this course);
  • We are unable to make any exceptions.

I developed my own style of writing and I learned to implement writing in my daily schedule.

It gave me insight into the writing process, as well as give me tools to write more efficiently and to write more ‘readable’!

This course teaches you how to organise your thoughts, put them on paper and transform a draft in a well-structured piece of text. Also, examples given in class clearly demonstrate how people read and understand what they read which is of great help for academic writing.
