As a supervisor you are in a perfect position to notice (personal) issues of your PhD candidates that might influence the PhD-trajectory. This might even worry you. During a series of masterclasses offered by the PhD psychologist of Utrecht University, we will offer you a way of managing a conversation about possible (personal) issues with your PhD candidates. Your daily practice experiences will be used.
Efficient supervision: Mentoring cycle of Lois Zachary
This masterclass is about efficient supervision. As a (co-)promotor, daily supervisor or PhD-mentor, you need to balance your time and supervise as efficient as possible while not losing a good working relationship. The mentoring cycle of Lois J. Zachary is supportive in this. During this masterclass we will attend to the following topics:
- Preparing; Getting ready for a mentoring relationship;
- Negotiating; Establishing agreements;
- Enabling Growth: support, challenge, vision, feedback, overcoming obstacles;
- Coming to Closure: Looking back, Moving forward.
We will offer you a way of managing possible issues with your PhD candidates. Your daily practice experiences will be used.

About the coaches
Drs. Paula Meesters is licensed psychologist. She works as PhD-psychologist at Utrecht University (team HR-Expertises). She teaches at the PhD Course Centre and advices Supervisory teams, PhD-mentors, HR Advisors, Corporate Social Work, Confidential Advisors. As licenced psychologist Paula supports the PhD candidates, providing both individual and group treatment. She is educated in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Solution Focused Short Term Therapy, Mindfulness Based Therapy, EMDR, ACT.
Dr. Inge van der Weijden is senior researcher, lecturer and PhD coordinator. She works at the Center for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) at University of Leiden (https://www.cwts.nl/people/inge-van-der-weijden) and supervises PhD candidates. She is President of the Netherlands Centre of Expertise for Doctoral Education (http://www.phdcentre.eu).
