Career Services: Workshop Intercultural Communication

to

Intercultural encounters in the work place often go smoothly. You can easily identify yourself with the other person regardless of differences in language or origins. However, you will be surprised by the miscommunications you can have with people from a different cultural background. Miscommunication can have many causes: from individual differences in personality to differences in behavior and belief arising from culture. Culture can offer an explanation, but at the same time it is not all explanatory.

In this workshop we explore how cultural patterns can influence our thinking, feeling and acting. We briefly discuss the concept of culture. We then focus on how to understand and use culture practically. You gain insight into how Dutch culture is experienced by other cultures and how 'we' interpret other cultures. Through this comparison you can discover how your preferences relate to "the Dutch standard" of - for example - communication, decision making and perception of time.

After this workshop you are more aware of your own cultural patterns and how they can influence the communication with people from another background. This way you are better able to prevent possible miscommunications. This makes future intercultural encounters both fun and more effective.

Our no-show policy

We are happy to offer workshops for free to all Utrecht University students. However: free of charge does not mean free of responsibility. Our activities tend to be fully booked well in advance. For every late cancellation or no-show we have had to disappoint students who would have liked to attend. This is how we work:

  • Once you have signed up for a workshop, we expect you to attend;
  • If you need to cancel your registration, do so at the earliest possible moment, at least 24 hours before the workshop;
  • Not showing up without notice will mean you cannot participate in any Career Services activity for 8 weeks. Two no-shows mean you cannot participate for the remainder of the academic year.
