Proteins need to fold into their correct three-dimensional structures in order to function. In diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and Huntington's, proteins misfold leading to cellular damage and death. My research group uses the model organism C. elegans to study at the molecular level how proteins misfold during aging of the animal. We accomplish this using fluorescence microscopy combined with other biochemical and biophysical methods.
