Dr. ir. Ruud Custers

I am an Associate Professor specialized in research on social cognition and motivation. I received my PhD cum laude from Utrecht University in 2006 and a Veni-grant from the Dutch Science Foundation (NWO) in the same year for my research of the role of consciousness in goal-pursuit. In 2011 I moved to UCL, London, as a Senior Lecturer in the Experimental Psychology department and returned to Utrecht University in 2016 Associate Professor. I served as Associated Editor for the Journal of Experimental Psychology general and as President of the Society for the Science of Motivation.

My research is on how people represent their goals and how these representations influence behavior. I am increasingly investigating this topic in relation to AI, addressing the question of how people's goal-representations influence, and are influence by, interactions with AI agents.
