“We use observations and models to map out how quickly the polar ice caps are melting, now and in the future.”

In the polar regions, the atmosphere warms up almost three times faster than the global average. Peter Kuipers Munneke and his colleagues at the Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research Utrecht are investigating how and how quickly the polar ice sheets respond to warming. They pay special attention to the influence of climate change on the snow layer that covers the ice sheets – how quickly it melts and how much melt water eventually ends up in the oceans. In that way, they help to better understand the behaviour of the large ice sheets in the climate system.
