Timothy Heimlich is Assistant Professor of Long Eighteenth Century Literature in English. He has taught at Utrecht since September 2022.

He received his PhD in English from the University of California, Berkeley and his BA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Before arriving at Utrecht, he taught English literature at the University of Cambridge.

His research focuses on Anglophone literatures of the long eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, with specialisms in the global contexts of British Romanticism, Welsh writing in English, and gothic. His first book project, Reinventing Britishness, argues that Wales and Welshness were crucial figural resources in literary inventions of an imperial British identity, both within Great Britain and beyond, from the late seventeenth through the mid-nineteenth centuries. He has also begun a second project on gothic writing from across the British Empire in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
