Sandra Hauswirth has a background in Environmental Sciences and Engineering (ETH Zürich, 2018). Her master thesis focused on the relative importance of climate and socio economic changes on future global groundwater resources and was in collaboration with Utrecht University. After her studies she continued working as a research assistant at Utrecht University before starting as a Junior Researcher/Consultant in the Groundwater Management Departement at Deltares.

Following her interest in water resources and working at the interface between research and application, she started her joint PhD project with Utrecht University and Rijkswaterstaat in 2020. Her research is focusing on quantifying drought impacts on water resources using machine learning. By combining local models and large scale forecasting and climate ensembles, she bridges the gap from global to local scale regarding hydrological drought modelling.
