Opgeleid als cultureel antropoloog en met meer dan 20 jaar ervaring op het gebied van onderzoek naar geleefde religie in Ghana, bestudeert Birgit Meyer religie vanuit een mondiaal, materieel en post-seculier perspectief. Drijfveer van haar onderzoek is het streven om de veranderende rol en plaats van religie in onze tijd te begrijpen en te laten zien dat wetenschappelijk onderzoek naar religie van centraal belang is voor een beter begrip van onze wereld in het begin van de 21ste eeuw. Tekenend voor haar werk is de synthese tussen empirisch onderzoek en theoretische reflectie in een brede multidisciplinaire setting. Zwaartepunten van haar onderzoek zijn de opkomst en populariteit van globale pinksterkerken; religie, populaire cultuur en erfgoed; religie en media; religie en de publieke sfeer; religieuze visuele cultuur, zintuigen en esthetiek.

Birgit Meyer studeerde religiewetenschap en (ortho)pedagogiek aan de Universität Bremen en culturele antropologie aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA). Na haar promotie in 1995 was zij enkele jaren verbonden aan het onderzoekscentrum Godsdienst en Maatschappij (UvA). Tussen 2004 en 2011 was zij hoogleraar culturele antropologie aan de Vrije Universiteit. Sinds September 2011 is zij hoogleraar religiewetenschap aan de UU. Tussen 2000 en 2006 gaf zij leiding aan het NWO Pionier programma Modern Mass Media, Religion and the Imagination of Communities. Zij heeft veel geschreven over zending en kolonialisme in Afrika, moderniteit en bekering, de opkomst van pinksterkerken in het neo-liberale tijdperk, de relatie tussen media, religie en identiteit, alsmede materiële religie en de rol en plaats van religie in de 21ste eeuw. Haar voornaamste boekpublicaties zijn Translating the Devil. Religion and Modernity Among the Ewe (1999), Globalization and Identity (geredig. met Peter Geschiere, 1999), Magic and Modernity (geredig. met Peter Pels, 2003) Religion, Media and the Public Sphere (gered. met Annelies Moors, 2006) en Aesthetic Formations. Media, Religion and the Senses (Palgrave Macmillan, 2009), Things. Religion and the Question of Materiality (gered. met Dick Houtman, Fordham 2012) en Sensational Movies. Video, Vision and Christianity in Ghana (Berkeley: The University of California Press). Zij is vice-voorzitter van het International African Institute (London), lid van de KNAW en een van de editors van Material Religion. In het academisch jaar 2010-2011 was zij fellow aan het Wissenschaftskolleg te Berlijn. In november 2011 kreeg ze de Anneliese Maier Forschungspreis (Alexander von Humboldt Stichting) toegekend. In 2015 ontving ze de prijs Akademiehoogleraar van de KNAW en de Spinozapremie van NWO.

2013-2016: Currents of faith, places of history: religious diasporas, connections, moral circumscriptions and world-making in the Atlantic space, (CURRENTS), with Dr Ramon Sarro, Lisbon/Bergen (PL), Dr David Berliner, Brussels, and Dr Ramon Sarro (Oxford); BM is the PI for the Dutch sub-project (2 part-time postdocs).
