Arnout Geeraert is Assistant Professor at Utrecht University, Utrecht School of Governance. He is a Guest Professor at LUNEX University. He was a visiting lecturer at the University of Kent, Brussels School of International Studies (2017-2018). He studied International Politics (University of Leuven, 2010) and International and European law (University of Brussels, 2011) and holds a PhD in Social Sciences from the University of Leuven (December 2013). His doctoral research explored the role of the European Union in achieving good governance in international sport organisations, taking a principal-agent perspective. 

His recent work analyses the role of the European Union in transnational private governance, looks into elements of good governance in sport organisations, and explores public-private interactions in global (sport) governance. His work has appeared in such journals as Journal of European Public Policy, Journal of European Integration, Public Administration, European Sport Management Quarterly, and Journal of Environmental Policy and Planning. He is the author of "The EU in international sports governance" (Palgrave, 2016) and co-editor of "Good governance in sport: Critical reflections" (Routledge, 2022).

Arnout Geeraert is a member of the UNESCO MINEPS VI Working Group "Protecting the Integrity of Sport" and of the International Partnership against Corruption in Sport (IPACS) Task Force on “Optimising the Processes of Compliance with Good Governance Principles to mitigate the Risk of Corruption”. He is the President of the Integrity Commission of the Belgian Football Association and a member of the Advisory Committee for Temporary Employment Activities and Activities for Sports Agents of the Flemish Government. He acted as a consultant for the Council of Europe, and advised the EU Expert Group on Good Governance.

He developed the Sports Governance Observer, National Sports Governance Observer, and National Anti-Doping Governance Observer benchmarking tools for good governance in sport organizations and devised a code and indicators of good governance in sport federations on behalf of the Flemish government.
