Research in the field of Media and Performance Studies at Utrecht University is specifically interested in emerging media, comparative media research, and the relationship among media, culture and society in a global context from both historical and theoretical perspectives. Students will receive a thorough grounding in the theoretical and historical approaches to media and performance and their impact on citizenship, cultural identity, new forms of (popular) representation, entertainment, and cultural participation.
The Research Master in Media Studies is aimed at excellent students with a strong background in the history and theory of stage/screen media (theatre, dance, film, television, digital media). We welcome students with an interest in theoretical and historical research in media and performance, their cultural construction and institutional embedding, their impact on citizenship, cultural identity, old and new forms of (popular) representation, entertainment and cultural participation.
Please note that this programme does not offer courses in fields such as media production or journalism!
