Financial Matters
Expenditure
The offer of a place on the LLM programme in Law and Economics does not constitute an offer of financial support from Utrecht University. The tuition fee covers the cost of teaching, but not the cost of study materials, travelling to and from Utrecht, or living expenses (such as accommodation, food and insurance). You will therefore need a well-balanced financial plan to support you through your studies. Please read more about tuition fees in general and about the additional costs of study and living.
Sources of financial support
As an international student in the Netherlands, you may be eligible for one of a number of different student grants or loans. The following list will give you an idea of some of the award schemes currently available.
Dutch Student Grant and Loans System
International students who are from countries within the EU/EEA and are studying in the Netherlands may be eligible to a student grant or tuition fee allowance from the Dutch Students Grant and Loans System. Because the LLM Legal Research is a two-year programme, grants or loans awarded under this scheme are for a period of two years.
Netherlands Fellowship Programmes
The LLM programme in Law and Economics has been selected for the Netherlands Fellowship Programmes (NFP). NFP scholarships are funded by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs and are awarded to professionals from the selected countries included in the scheme. If you are applying for the LLM in Law and Economics and would like to apply for an NFP scholarship, please click here for more information.
Other sources of funding
If you are not eligible for an NFP scholarship, a list of alternative grants is available here. Alternatively, you can also try the Netherlands Student Grantfinder, an online search engine that details financial awards available for international students wishing to study in the Netherlands.
Even if you do receive a grant or a scholarship, it should be noted that the amount of money you receive will probably not cover your studying and living costs completely. You might therefore wish to take a part-time job to supplement your income while you are in the Netherlands.
