By training Verkuyten is a social psychologist and an anthropologist. He did his PhD at Erasmus University Rotterdam (1988) and worked as an assistant professor at the Law Faculty at this University. In 1993 he moved to Utrecht university as an associate professor and later became a full professor in the Faculty of Social and Behavioral Sciences.
