Nooit eerder ging er zoveel maatschappelijke aandacht uit naar de zwarte bladzijdes van het Nederlands koloniale verleden en de doorwerking daarvan in het heden. Hiermee krijgen we steeds meer zicht op de vergaande effecten van het kolonialisme op de totstandkoming en bestendiging van belangrijke instituties en politieke of bestuurlijke verhoudingen binnen de Nederlandse samenleving. Deze maatschappelijke trend bereikt nu ook universiteiten en andere onderwijsinstellingen. In opdracht van Nyenrode Business University brengt de Universiteit Utrecht in kaart in hoeverre ook bij de oprichting van Nyenrode de effecten van het kolonialisme hebben doorgewerkt. 

Dit onderzoek dat wordt uitgevoerd door dr. Jorrit Steehouder, richt in de eerste plaats op het beantwoorden van de vraag hoe binnen het Nederlandse ondernemersnetwerk waaruit Nyenrode voortkwam de gepercipieerde Nederlandse koloniale toekomst een rol speelde bij het ontwerp en de totstandkoming van het Nederlands Opleidings Instituut voor het Buitenland (NOIB), de voorloper van Nyenrode in de periode 1941-1950. Met welke ideeën en toekomstbeelden gingen de betrokken hoofdrolspelers aan de slag? Hoe werkten deze ideeën door in de oprichting van het NOIB, haar curriculum en studentencultuur? De resultaten van dit onderzoek worden gebundeld in een rapport dat aan het bestuur van Nyenrode wordt gepresenteerd.

Since its inception, the European integration project has been contested. This interdisciplinary research project analyzes the different blueprints for Europe that were present in the period 1930-1963, thereby aiming to show why some blueprints set their stamps on the institutional start-up of European integration, while other blueprints were rejected.  Going beyond a state-centric analysis in order to achieve this, the research project focuses on transnational political, clerical and economic networks. By including a wider range of actors, the project expands the existing historiography of the EU’s “early” integration. Moreover, such a new understanding of the diversity of ideas of “what is Europe” in these early years of European integration may help to elucidate the driving forces and institutional dynamics in today’s EU.

Focusing on the institutional start-up phase of Europe, Jorrit's individual sub-project entitled 'Economic Blueprints for Europe,1930-1963' deals with economic blueprints. These blueprints were advanced by (for example) individuals like the Dutch Foreign Minister J.W. Beyen (who presented plans for a Common Market) German ordo-liberals from the Freiburger Schule and policymakers from across the Atlantic. The project will unveil the interconnectedness of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), the European Payments Union (EPU), the Organization for European Economic Cooperation (OEEC), the Bretton Woods’ ‘system’ and GATT, and assess their impact on the integration process and the institutional path-dependencies inherent to it. By applying the concept of a ‘blueprint’, and by tracking down original ideas, networks, and key actors, it will be explicated how and why some blueprints triumphed over others. Of fundamental interest to this project is also to identify the ‘loser blueprints’, and to see how they influenced the ‘battle over blueprints’ – and thereby the process of European integration.
