Degree from a non-Dutch university
This page outlines the step-by-step process for completing your application to a Master's programme at Utrecht University. Please read this information thoroughly before starting your application.
To be eligible for the Master’s programme International Development Studies, you must satisfy the following admission requirements:
- An (inter)national academic Bachelor's degree in Human Geography and Planning or a related subject such as Sociology, Anthropology, Economics, International Politics, Liberal Arts and Sciences and Environmental Sciences, with a clear and demonstrable international development orientation;
Our International Students Admissions office will verify whether a non-Dutch academic degree is equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree at a Dutch research university. All international Bachelor’s degrees are evaluated based on standards set by the NUFFIC. If your degree is assessed as less than equivalent to a 3-year Dutch research University degree, or as a bachelor from a university of applied sciences, you are most likely not eligible for admission.
- Knowledge of, and experience with, both quantitative and qualitative methods for research in Social Sciences.
- Clear and demonstrable knowledge of international development: Its recommended to have approximately 20 EC in international development related courses in your previous education or you should be able to make up for this with relevant work experience.
In principle, students with a Bachelor’s degree from a university must have a GPA of at least 2.4 (on a scale of 1-4) or at least 6.5 under the Dutch system to qualify for admission. A lower GPA may be considered for admission, but the Admissions Committee will look at the student’s marks for courses in international development, performance development throughout the Bachelor’s programme, study duration, relevant work experience and the letter of motivation. A good command of English, both verbal and written, is required in all cases.
