Profile

Kees van den Bos is Professor of Social Psychology Including the Social Psychology of Organizations (since 2001) and Professor of Empirical Legal Science (since 2013). His main research interests focus on experienced fair and unfair treatment, morality, cultural worldviews, trust, prosocial behavior, and radicalization, extremism, and terrorism.

Insights that follow from his basic research are applied in important societal contexts, especially in the domain of law, human behavior, and society. Topics that he studies include the issue of fair processes in government-citizen interactions, the role of group threat and deprivation in terrorism and radical behavior, and the psychological processes that lead people to trust government and important societal institutions.

Kees van den Bos has published about 200 publications, including several publications in high-impact outlets. He received his Ph.D. cum laude (1996), won a dissertation award of the Association of Dutch Social Psychologists, and obtained several competitive research grants, including a postdoc grant from the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), a VICI grant from the Dutch national science foundation (NWO), and several research grants from Dutch ministries.

He was a senior associate editor at both the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology and Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin and he was an associate editor of the European Journal of Social Psychology and of Social Justice Research. A former chair of his department for several years, he was the psychology teacher of the year at Utrecht University in both 2009 and 2010. Kees coaches legal scholars in setting up and conducting empirical research projects.

Kees van den Bos is Professor of Social Psychology Including the Social Psychology of Organizations and Professor of Empirical Legal Science at Utrecht University, the Netherlands. His main research interests focus on experienced fair and unfair treatment, morality, cultural worldviews, trust, and prosocial behavior. In studying these issues, he has developed a research program that investigates the basic social psychological processes pertaining to how people form fairness judgments exactly, how they use these judgments in their daily lives, what affects the relative importance of their fairness concerns versus the motive of self-interest, and what are the antecedents of people's negative reactions toward events that violate their cultural norms and values. Insights that follow from this program are applied in important societal contexts such as the issue of fair processes in courtrooms and government-citizen interactions, the role of group threat and deprivation in terrorism and radical behavior, and the psychological processes that lead people to trust government and important societal institutions.

I derive the inspiration for my research program from big societal topics and core issues in interpersonal behavior. My aim is to examine these subjects by using and developing modern psychological theories and by setting up empirical studies that try to combine high levels of external and internal validity that are meaningful in contexts pertaining to law, society, and human behavior.

As such, basic studies in the research program that my colleagues and I work on examine the social psychology of fairness, morality, and cultural worldviews. Insights that follow from these studies are applied in important societal and organizational contexts, in recent years focusing on contexts related to law and human behavior. For example, we study the social psychology of terrorism and radical behavior, the issue of trust in government, and the role of procedural justice in perceived legitimacy of government and acceptance of legal decisions. I am also getting more and more interested in cross-cultural differences as well as social distance and societal polarization and am developing methods to study these issues with experimental control or other empirical methods that make sense.

One of the issues on which I focus in my current work is the social psychology of behavioral inhibition and disinhibition. Many social philosophers, economists, and other theorists have long assumed that it is good when people inhibit their behaviors, because behavioral inhibition will lead people to refrain from egoistic and socially undesirable behavior. In contrast, the line of research we pursue shows that sometimes it is actions with benign social motives that are inhibited. Especially in confusing, unusual, ambiguous, or otherwise unsettling situations, people try to make sense of what is going on and how to behave. Sense making and social appraisal is facilitated when ongoing behavioral action is inhibited, but too strong activation of the behavioral inhibition system can block prosocial choices and prosocial behavior. Thus, lowering behavioral inhibition by reminding people of disinhibited behaviors they have performed in the past can promote prosocial choices and behavior. Findings from our lab indeed reveal robust effects of behavioral disinhibition on classic social psychological phenomena, such as bystander intervention, moral decision making, conformity, ingroup affiliation, and social justice. These findings fit an appraisal-inhibition model of prosocial behavior. This model describes how people appraise situations and the psychological processes that lead them to engage in or refrain from normative and prosocial behaviors.

We use this line of reasoning to study in depth the issue of law and human behavior and especially how people make sense of what is happening in the courtroom where important decisions are made about them. Typically, there is a lot at stake for laypeople entering a court hearing and they may feel evaluated in the process. As a result, individuals will try to make sense of the court hearing and of how they are evaluated by the judge. To facilitate sense-making processes, these individuals will tend to pause and check what is going on and what they should expect will be happening. Thus, we suggest that lay people react to entering their court hearing by inhibiting ongoing action and activating the behavioral inhibition system. After all, the activation of the behavioral inhibition system allows people to first try to interpret and appraise what is going on, how the judge will evaluate him or her, what the judge might be thinking about his or her case, and what is the appropriate behavior in this situation. In field experiments and other studies with high levels of both internal and external validity we study the implications of this line of reasoning.

Other issues that I study are how social distance between judges and citizens play a role in courtroom interactions, the relationship between perceived procedural justice, outcome favorability, and trust in judges, and the evaluative pressures people experience who are undergoing criminal trials.

I work on the assumption that empirical research is complementary to "black letter law." As such I adhere to a constructive perspective on empirical research contributing to the understanding of normative or positive legal issues.

I also think that founding disciplines such as social psychology can not only be applied meaningfully in legal (and organizational and societal) contexts, but also that insights from empirical legal studies can feed back into more nuanced and hence more meaningul basic social psychology. Thus, as a "T-shaped professional" I work from certain standpoints, but am also actively engaged in the communication with other scientific disciplines and the relevance of our research for various societal fields.
