Birte Böök is Assistant Professor at the Department International and European Law (IER) of the Utrecht School of Law. Her research focuses on public international law, European law and international legal theory, with a particular focus on fundamental rights and gender equality. She is part of the coordination team of the gender stream of the European network of legal experts in gender equality and non-discrimination. In addition, she is also part of the management team of the Gender and Diversity Hub.

Before joining Utrecht University in February 2020, Dr. Böök worked as a legal analyst for a legal and policy consultancy firm in Brussels, where she specialised in fundamental rights and justice, participating in multiple research projects funded by the EU in these and other areas.

She holds an LLM in Comparative, European and International Laws from the European University Institute (2015) and an LLM in International and European law from the University of Amsterdam (2012; cum laude), receiving awards of excellence for Highest Grade Point Average and for Best Master Thesis. In November 2018, she obtained her PhD in Public International Law from the European University Institute, with her thesis entitled International Norm Conflicts Through the Lens of Alexy’s Principles Theory. During her PhD, she acted as Managing Editor for the European Journal of Legal Studies.
