Varvara (Varya) Bazilova is a hydrologist by training interested in the cryosphere and remote sensing. She obtained her BSc degree in hydrometeorology from Lomonosov Moscow State University with the thesis related to the estimation of the suspended sediment budget in a pro glacier river and MSc degree in geosciences from the University of Oslo working on remote sensing of cryosphere, glacial lake mapping, and glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) detection. She has experience in glacier mass balance monitoring fieldwork in the Russian Caucasus (Djankuat glacier), Tian-Shan (Karabatkak glacier), and Arctic Sweden (Storglaciären glacier, Tarfala). 

Since January 2022 Varya is a Ph.D. candidate in the Physical Geography Department of Utrecht University under the supervision of Dr. Prof. Walter Immerzeel and Dr. Tjalling de Haas. She is a part of the Mountain Hydrology group. The main focus of her work is understanding (mapping, identifying the triggering mechanisms, and assessing the risk) the hazards (such as landslides and floods, but also GLOFs) in High Mountain Asia.
