Thomas Riesthuis is Assistant professor in legal theory at the Institute of Constitutional, Administrative Law and Legal Theory. In his research, he explores the philosophical foundations of law in European multi-level legal systems. He also has an interest in legal pluralism, (methodology of) jurisprudence and the rule of law. Thomas is a member of the coordinating team of the research cluster Empirical Research into Institutions for conflict resolution and affiliated with the Montaigne Centre for Rule of Law and Administration of Justice.
Thomas Riesthuis teaches courses in foundations of law, jurisprudence and legal philosophy. In his role as a teacher he is also member of the advisory committee of the bachelor programme in law. Furthermore, Thomas is the faculty contact person for research integrity at the LEG faculty. He also teaches on responsible conduct of research in the LEG faculty courses for PhD candidates on research integrity. Lastly, Thomas is deputy chair of the Examination Appeals Board of Utrecht University.
Thomas holds an LLM and PhD in law and an MA in philosophy of science from Erasmus University Rotterdam. His PhD thesis (The Intertwinement of Legal Orders : a Critical Reconstruction of Theories of Jurisprudence) is available online here. He has held visiting fellowships at Queen Mary University of London and the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law in Heidelberg.
