I work on the creation of a 3D subsurface model that can simulate reactive flow in order to forecast the feasibility and safety of potential future scenarios at the Griftpark, a highly contaminated site at the location of a former manufactured gas plant in Utrecht. In particular, we look at the (anoxic) biodegradation of mixtures of organic contaminants.

The project is commisioned by the Municipality of Utrecht and in my work I include the question how risk analysis, as scientific researchers are able to perform (including for example probabilistic predictions), translate to project managers and policy makers. How to make the analysis understandable and socio-economically relevant without disparaging the extend of our knowledge of the complex subsoil?
