Dr Solène Guggisberg rejoined Utrecht University in March 2021, having previously undertaken postdoctoral research at the same institution from October 2017 to August 2020 on international fisheries law as a Senior Nereus Fellow (Utrecht University/Nereus Program of the Nippon Foundation). Prior to that, she has been employed as associate legal officer at the International Court of Justice, policy officer at the European Commission, consultant for the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Wildlife Fund, as well as counsel in the San Padre Pio case and junior counsel in the Bangladesh v. Myanmar case in front of ITLOS. In these various positions, she has provided legal advice and opinions on international and EU fisheries law, maritime delimitation, and sustainable development issues.

Solène was educated at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, obtaining a degree (Licence) in 2007 in international relations, the University of Edinburgh, earning an LL.M (Distinction) in international law, and the Bucerius Law School in Hamburg where she completed her Ph.D (magna cum laude) in law, on the use of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species for fisheries. She was also a doctoral scholar of the Max Planck Research School for Maritime Affairs.
