Remco Raben is associate professor at the section History of International Relations (GIB) and professor of colonial and postcolonial literary and cultural history at the University of Amsterdam.

My teaching concentrates on non-western history, in particular Asia. Teaching subjects are: international relations, world history, East-West relations, the rise of Asia, imperialism and decolonization, Indonesia, Third World.
My research interests are:
1) A survey of the 'long decolonization' of Indonesia between the 1920s and 1960s, focusing on the role and performance of the state administrative institutions.
2) The history of postcolonial Netherlands: a cultural history of Dutch world visions as influenced by colonial experiences and contacts.
3) A biography of Wim F. Wertheim.
4) History of cities, ethnicity and slavery in early-modern Southeast and South Asia.
5) Visual cultures in non-western history.
