Patrick Van Rossem is Associate Professor of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Art History department of Utrecht University (The Netherlands). 

He studied Art History (Humanities) and Media and Communication (Social Sciences) at Ghent University. In London, he studied Curating at Goldsmith College, University of London.

From 1999 to 2008 he was a researcher, teaching assistant and finally assistant professor at the Art History dept. of Ghent University (Belgium). He obtained his Ph.D. in Art History in 2006 (Ghent University) with a dissertation on artist audience relations in de second half or the 20th century. 

Since 2008 Patrick Van Rossem has been working at Utrecht University as an Associate Professor in Art History. He has been coordinator of the Master Program in Modern and Contemporary Art (2008 - 2010), the Master track Modern and Contemporary Art (2010 - 2016), the Master in Art History (2014 - 2016), the Bachelor in Art History (2018 - 2023) and the Research Master in Art History (since Sept. 2023).

Patrick Van Rossem is Head of Art History since May 2022. 

His research focusses on post 1960s art and more specifically on artists audience relations, the representation of audiences and the performative turn.  

His teaching focusses on post 1960s art, audiences for art, curating, art mediation and education.
