Dr. Matteo Gazzani is an associate professor in the group of Energy & Resources of the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development. His research focuses on energy systems and integrates technical concepts from chemical, mechanical and electrical engineering. Especially, he aims at enabling the deployment of new technologies for clean energy production by: innovating the process synthesis, improving the methodology and available tools for process simulation, and bridging fundamental science (e.g. new materials) to the process. He is particularly interested in CO2 capture and storage, enhanced gas separation, optimization of decentralized energy systems, water-energy nexus, and decarbonization of energy intensive industries.

Before joining the Copernicus Institute, Dr. Matteo Gazzani worked as senior scientist (2016-2017) and as postdoctoral fellow (2013-2016) in the Institute of Process Engineering at ETH Zurich. He received his BSc and MSc in Energy Engineering, with focus on power production, from Politecnico di Milano. He obtained his Ph.D. cum laude in Energy and Nuclear Sciences and Technologies at Politecnico di Milano. During his doctoral studies he was awarded the Techint-Rocca Fellowship to spend 6 months at MIT as visiting researcher. Dr. Gazzani was also the recipient of the best technical paper award from ASME-Turboexpo 2012.
